Product Story

This is a genuine Irish Bodhrán--pronounced "Bow-rawn"--the traditional percussion instrument used in Gaelic music for centuries. Handcrafted in Connemara along Ireland's west coast, each unique instrument is made by Malachy Kearns, an artisan with 30 years of experience who operates out of an old Franciscan monastery and who crafted the original River Dance stage drums. The drum is made from goatskin treated with closely guarded traditional techniques (the goatskin is buried in manure for chemical-free processing) and stretched over a lacquered beech hoop frame where it is meticulously tacked in place and trimmed. The hardwood beater, or "tipper," is used to strike the drum while altering the tension of the skin from the opposite side with the other hand, resulting in variations in timbre and color of sound. Includes playing guide. 14" Diam x 3" H. (1 lb.)
