Albert Hammacher, the man who would eventually provide half of our company's name, is born on February 16, 1839 in Leichlingen, a town in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany. Hammacher would come to be viewed as one of the leading figures in the hardware industry in the U.S. and Germany during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
US HistoryUnited States Army officer George Armstrong Custer is born in Ohio. Custer developed a strong reputation leading Union troops during the Civil War-despite graduating last in his class at West Point-and attained the rank of brigadier general at age 23. After the Civil War, he was dispatched to the west to fight in the Indian Wars. Custer and all the men with him (two of his brothers among them) were killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, in a battle that has come to be known as "Custer's Last Stand."

The store that would eventually become known as Hammacher Schlemmer-one of the first national hardware stores-begins at 221 Bowery in New York City. Mr. Charles Tollner was the sole proprietor and creator of this bustling establishment that specializes in hard-to-find tools. Tollner is among the many immigrants arriving from Germany and Scandinavia as the industrial revolution in Europe displaces workers from jobs. By specializing in high-quality tools and equipment, Tollner's store quickly gains a reputation as the place to go when an item simply could not be found anywhere else.
US HistoryOn January 24, 1848, gold is discovered in California, eventually sparking a huge influx of prospectors from across the country and around the world to the area. During the resulting "Gold Rush", miners extract more than 750,000 pounds of the precious metal worth a total of $2 billion, and San Francisco grows from a settlement of about 200 to a boomtown of 36,000 by 1852.

Twelve-year-old William Schlemmer, born in Westphalia, Germany, comes to America where he finds sanctuary and employment at the store that will later carry his name. Making a handsome wage of $2 a week, and sending a dollar of that home to his family, Schlemmer learned considerably more than the nuts and bolts of the hardware business. Under Tollner's tutelage, Schlemmer learned what it took to run a store successfully: carry the best quality available, offer only hard-to-find or one-of-a-kind merchandise, embrace innovation and always give customers exceptional service.

By 1857, construction is booming and the hardware business increasingly found itself in demand. As a result Tollner needs to expand to larger quarters in order to house the increase in inventory and stock. As the Civil War began, demand increased for Hammacher & Tollner's specialty hardware, with the company supplying Northern manufacturers with hard-to-get tools and hardware for the war effort.
As the War continued, New York City faced a severe coin shortage resulting from the hoarding of both gold and silver. In response, the U.S. Government allowed merchants to mint their own coins to exchange during the war - much like in-store coupons are used today. Called "rebellion tokens" or "copperheads," these coins were made out of copper, brass, copper nickel or lead. Hammacher's tokens, of course, were the best quality available - copper. As the war drew to a close, the Government put a stop to the practice, yet few of the tokens ever found their way back to the place of issue to be redeemed for merchandise.
US HistoryThe American Civil War, or the War Between the States, begins in April of 1861, when forces of the newly formed Confederate States attack the U.S. military base at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. The war, the deadliest and also one of the most influential in American history - it ended slavery, restored the Union and strengthened the role of the Federal government - lasted until April of 1865.

Six years before Sears and Roebuck, A. Hammacher & Co. published its first catalog of hardware and tools. The hardcover book was used by the company's salesman as they crisscrossed the country taking orders from customers. The first printing was less than 500 copies, a far cry from the vast amount of catalogs now sent all over the globe.

Though Garfield survives the initial attack, he gradually weakens over the next several weeks and dies on September 19, 1881. Vice President Chester A. Arthur is sworn in as the nation's 21st President.

Business at Hammacher Schlemmer is booming as the company stocks over 100,000 items, the largest inventory of hardware on the East Coast. Even more unusual than the diverse selection is the manner in which it is displayed - on velvet in mahogany cabinets. On a more somber note, Albert Hammacher passes away at the age of 73.

Two years after World War I broke out, William Schlemmer Sr. dies at the age of 75, leaving his son William F. Schlemmer complete control of the company. The firm receives a citation that read: "The War Department of the United States of America recognizes in this award for distinguished service the loyalty, energy and efficiency in the performance of the war work by which Hammacher Schlemmer Co. added materially in obtaining victory for the arms of the United States of America in the war with the Imperial German Government and the Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Government."

By 1929, Hammacher Schlemmer was becoming known as an entertaining place to shop as well as browse for the serendipitous. Thanks to this reputation, we became the inspiration for a Broadway show tune composed by Howard Dietz for his play The Little Show, entitled, "Hammacher Schlemmer, I Love You." The song included such stanzas as:
"Hammacher Schlemmer, I Love You -
You're Like a Sweetheart to Me -
Hammacher Schlemmer, Above You
No Other Firm E'er Could Be.
Your Business Deserved Devotion
That Is Loyal -
I Love You Just Like a Fellow
Loves His Goil -
So Always Remember -
Hammacher Schlemmer - I Love You."

MediaOne way Hammacher Schlemmer seeks to appeal to the fastidious taste of its upscale clientele is by putting an unusual twist on otherwise mundane household items. This ad features the "Sewette", a small decorative screen that unfolds to reveal sewing supplies, and a waste basket made from recycled book bindings "reputed to be over a century old". Notice the gnomes at the bottom of the ad, particularly the one on the right with a small dog...perhaps a tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Schlemmer, who owned a pair of Yorkshire terriers.

By 1955, Hammacher Schlemmer completely discontinues the sale of hardware in favor of more upscale merchandise with the renewed emphasis on being the "first" to offer the "Unexpected." However, luxury was not the only criteria, rather, 98-percent of the items on Hammacher Schlemmer's shelves are functional, unusual and known for their novelty, such as The Coffee Cooler and Reclino Specs. Sadly, this same year, Else Schlemmer dies, bequeathing $473,000 to her employees.
US HistoryOn December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks is arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white person, sparking the beginnings of the national civil rights movement. That same year, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower sends the first U.S. advisors to South Vietnam.

This magazine advertisement-an open letter to customers-pictures Gerald with our familiar mascots, the gnomes Hammacher and Schlemmer.

Invento quickly evolved into a clearinghouse for the new and unusual, sourcing items from around the world and selling them under its own namesake brand. It sold goods not only to Hammacher Schlemmer, but also to such major national retailers such as Sears and Neiman Marcus, generating annual sales of nearly $2.5 million.
