Earrings, rings, and necklaces were soiled with a mixture of hair gel, hand lotion, and dirt and placed in an oven to solidify the detritus. An independent testing laboratory used a scale with an accuracy to 0.0001 grams to weigh each piece after the soiling process and again after one cycle in the ultrasonic cleaners.
