Product Story

This wool sweater originated in the early 19th century among the fisherfolk of Irelands west coast and is today made using the same traditional Aran stitching by one of the last surviving woolen mills from the 17th century in rural County Kerry. The sweaters are handmade from the fleece of Jacobs sheep, known for their cream-colored, or bainin, wool that, when spun, retains its natural oils, resulting in water-resistant fabric with strong insulating properties. The tight cable, honeycomb, basket, and diamond stitch patterns used in the sweater create tiny air pockets that improve heat retention, as well as convey an image of the family to which the knitter belongs; the honeycomb evokes an image of a hardworking bee, the diamond, a wish of success and wealth. Organically processed with no chemical dyes, the wool is worsted spun, giving it a softness and durability that will last. Imported. Specify mens sizes (44), L (46), XL (48), XXL (50). (2 lbs.)
