Product Story

This is the packable Panama hat that unfolds back to its original shape when unpacked. Available exclusively from Hammacher Schlemmer, the hat is made in Ecuador from bleached leaves of the Toquilla palm, the traditional plant fiber used to make Panama hats since they were first discovered by North Americans in the early 1900s during construction of the Panama Canal. Ideal for travel, it can be packed into suitcases or squeezed flat for between-seat storage, yet the fibers’ unique woven pattern allow the hat to unfold back to its original shape. Its brim provides 360º of sun protection (50+ UV rating); woven fibers allow air to circulate. Natural color. Men’s. Size X-Large (23 1/2-24"). (1 oz.)

How To Determine Your Hat Size

To get the proper fit in a hat, we recommend that you measure your head to determine your proper hat size.

How to Measure Your Head
  • Use a good quality tape measure, such as those used for sewing, to achieve the most accurate measurement.
  • Wrap the measuring tape around your head. The tape should be placed where you want the hat to rest, usually 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch above the top of your ears. For the best-looking and most comfortable fit, the bottom of the tape should touch your eyebrows while positioned straight around your head. Don't pull the tape too snugly or your hat will fit that tightly.
  • Once you've positioned the tape exactly where you want it, measure to the nearest one-eighth inch, or three millimeters.
  • Measure your head a second and third time to ensure accuracy.
