Spring has a habit of arriving in fits and starts, one warm afternoon followed by three cold ones. These tulips flower with a deep, lavender-purple in mid-spring once the season has made up its mind.
That rich color holds its own in a vase, and they make fine cut flowers. They’re equally at home in containers on the porch and in garden beds, so the same planting can serve the table and the yard. Good drainage and a thorough soaking at planting time are all they need to get going.
Twenty will handle a few pots, and 40 make a generous bed with a steady supply for the house. Somebody has to encapsulate the season, and lavender is a gracious choice.
