For much of the last century, the backyard chair was aluminum tubing and a few strips of plastic webbing, light enough to carry and seldom built to last more than a few summers. Comfort, if it came at all, was a cushion borrowed from the sofa.
Today’s version is considerably more generous. This lounge chair pairs a rust-resistant tubular steel frame with a wide, deep sling seat set at a relaxed recline, about 36 inches across. It supports up to 500 pounds, and the sling fabric lets air through on warm afternoons.
Choose a sage green or orange cushion, then set it on the patio or in a sunroom; with the included hardware, assembly takes about ten minutes. Some backyard traditions are worth keeping, though the wobble was never one of them.
