Paper simply can’t convey how spectacular our Northern Lights Tree is. Its dancing cascade of colors must be experienced in person. As its 87 LEDs light up 1,038 fiber-optic tips in your choice of 23 different synchronized patterns, filling the room with an everchanging glow, you’ll begin to understand why we named it after the northern lights.
Mind you, we’re not saying it’s in the same class as the real aurora borealis. Unlike the real aurora borealis, this one comes to you. And this 7.5’ tree includes a controller for selecting your favorite pattern, setting a timer, and more.
Only available from Hammacher Schlemmer, this customer favorite has become our most requested item at holiday time. Once you’ve seen it, you won’t be surprised.

What’s the fastest-growing recorded music format? No, not vinyl, and certainly not streaming. It’s the humble cassette.
That’s right: U.S. cassette sales have increased more than eightfold since 2013, with more than 600,000 units sold in 2025. Major artists like Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga have joined the party, releasing their latest albums on tape. We half-expect a run on pencils as all these cassette neophytes figure out how to wind back a wayward loop of tape.
The turntable of life. With The Any Music Format Stereo, no music format is ever obsolete. You can ride the waves of changing fashions, always ready to listen.
Now that music is easier than ever to find on streaming platforms, we’ve started to realize what’s irreplaceable when we dump our physical music collections: all the memories bound up with those objects. The gorgeous artwork of a vinyl LP cover. The little creak a cassette case makes when you open it. Where you were the first time you heard a life-changing album. Even the way a CD booklet smells. Seriously, take a whiff sometime!
Smell the memories. These days, there’s no reason to ever get rid of those memories. And if you’re just getting started building – or rebuilding – a physical music collection, there’s no reason to limit yourself to just one format.
Pick up whatever version you can find and pop it into The Any Music Format Stereo. Who knows? Someone else’s thrift-store castoff might carry a priceless memory for you someday.
For when your music collection goes back far enough to have broken your heart through multiple formats.
Plays vinyl records (33, 45, or 78 RPM), compact discs, cassette tapes, AM/FM radio, MP3 (through the USB slot or SD card reader), and streaming audio (as a Bluetooth speaker).

The whole point of Christmas morning is that it’s not like any other morning. That’s why we go through all the rigmarole. A tree inside the house. All those baubles and boughs. Kids waking up their parents before dawn – and the parents being happy about it. Christmas morning should feel like anything could happen.
And this year, perhaps one of those things is the kids riding their own train around, like extras from The Nutcracker.
All aboard for Christmas, choo-choo. What is it about Christmas and trains? There is no rail travel in the Nativity story. Santa Claus famously gets around by sleigh. And yet some special magic gets conjured up at the intersection of the two.
The fit seems so natural somehow that we don’t even think about it. Why wouldn’t there be movies like The Polar Express? It makes perfect sense when a Santa’s Village display includes miniature train rides, doesn’t it? And what’s more quintessentially Christmas than a model train circling the tree?
Next stop: lifelong memories. The Four-Passenger Ride-On Train elevates that magic by putting kids at the wheel of a train made just for them. Available only from Hammacher Schlemmer, this 12-volt electric train reaches speeds up to 3 mph, with simple pedal and directional controls. The oversized rubber-strip tires enable young engineers to conquer diverse terrain both indoors and outdoors with superior traction.
For all that, what makes it wonderful can’t be quantified in a list of specs. You’ll know it when you see their faces: that feeling that anything can happen on Christmas morning.
- ·Carries up to 4 passengers, ages 3-7
- ·Up to 2 hours of play on a charge
- ·Oversized rubber tires for indoor or outdoor play
- ·Realistic whistling and chuffing sounds

The moment we heard about the new Commodore 64 Ultimate – a faithful hardware recreation of the original 1982 classic, plus modern conveniences like USB, HDMI, and Wi-Fi – we started salivating to get our hands on it. We talked to Commodore President and CEO Peri Fractic about what makes it so different from any other retro tech out there.
Technology was always meant to serve people, not the other way around. For decades, it helped us create, explore, and connect in meaningful ways. But somewhere along the line, that relationship inverted. The tools that were meant to enrich our lives began competing for our attention, fragmenting our focus, and quietly eroding real human connection.
At Commodore, we believe technology should feel human again – intuitive, purposeful, and even a little magical. It should invite curiosity, not addiction. It should spark creativity, not dependency.
Authenticity. Not nostalgia as a surface treatment, but as something deeply respected and faithfully preserved. This is a true hardware recreation, behaving exactly as the original did, cycle for cycle, electrical pathway by pathway, as if you’d just taken it out of the box in the 1980s.
At the same time, we’ve carefully integrated modern enhancements where they genuinely serve the experience. So while it feels identical to the original, it fits seamlessly into today’s world. Stream a game off our servers via Wi-Fi if you like. Or play one from a 40-year-old dusty datasette attached to the back. It all works.
This is an important question, and I’m glad you asked. At Commodore, we believe that the product is the product; a lot of modern technology seems to have forgotten that and only see the user as the product, with data collection through endless engagement as how that product is sold to the customer. At Commodore, we don’t even have tracking cookies on our website. Your privacy is your privacy. Your life is your life. We want to keep it that way.

You may have gnoticed… our long association with a pair of gnomes. Named Hammacher and Schlemmer – more for marketing reasons than for any resemblance to our human founders, we presume – they’ve served as our demihuman familiars for over a century. And their gnomic brethren have haunted the popular imagination much longer than that.

We can pin the term “gnome” down to the year 1566, when a posthumous work by the Swiss scientist Paracelsus coined the name, and confidently declared they were 18 inches tall. (You’ve come a long way, science.) These mischievous mine-dwellers soon became conflated with other mythical little people with a reputation for mastery of the mechanical arts. Think of the elves helping the shoemaker in the fairy tale, or later, Disney’s diligent dwarves, whistling while they worked. The widespread presence of garden gnomes probably sealed some mental association between gnomes and yardwork.
Thus it made sense in 1920 to play on this pre-existing conception by naming our new brand of tools after one of these races of carpenters. “Dwarf tools” conjures up a picture of tiny little hammers and picks. There’s something about “Elf tools” that doesn’t ring quite right, either. Thus Hammacher Schlemmer debuted Gnome brand tools. It was the beginning of a beautiful mascotship.
Gname that artist. The association took hold quickly and firmly. By 1925, the Washington Herald could refer to “Mr. Schlemmer’s big hardware store, near Union Square, with the cute little gnomes”, with no further explanation.

This was the era when these drawings were produced. Alas, that’s all we know about them. Recently uncovered in the Hammacher Schlemmer archive at Duke University, they’re excellent examples of commercial illustration, rich with detail, redolent with charm. The gnomes tidy up, have tea, and cook a game bird over a campfire, their little dog at their heels all the way.
If only we could identify the artist. There’s no other documentation with the file. It’s listed in the archive guide as “Gnomes art, 1920s”. They do bear the tantalizing clue of a monogram signature. But after combing reference guides to American artists and illustrators of the time, the identity of DAS (or is it DSA?) remains a mystery.

Anyone out there recognize your Grandpa Don’s signature? Anyone deeply knowledgeable about commercial artists working in New York in the early-mid 20th century? Anyone sitting on a cache of Hammacher Schlemmer accounts-payable invoices from the Calvin Coolidge administration? Contact us at jason@hammacher.com if you can solve the Riddle of the Gnomes.
Gnow and forever. Alas, our shift away from hardware wasn’t good gnews for our mythical avatars. As tools receded from our catalogs, so did the gnomes, presumably back to their treasure caves. By 1948, when the New York Times reported on our 100th birthday party, they noted that “The little advertising gnomes who wielded tools on billboards so well that the houseware concern of Hammacher Schlemmer became world famous have long since gone.”
But gnomes are gnothing if not persistent. When we were taken over by new management in 1955, Hammacher and Schlemmer were invited back. A curly-bearded cartoon version was introduced and would appear countless times in catalogs and advertising. It wasn’t long until the gnomes regained their cover stardom, this time in three-dimensional plaster form, as seen frequently throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

As the latest custodians of Hammacher Schlemmer, we haven’t quite found a job for our old mascots to do, beyond inspiring the gname of our email newsletter, Gnomenclature. But keep your eyes peeled for those adroit little sprites. They never stay idle for long…

Right on the money… “C. Tollner & Hammacher Hardware,” the copper coin says, using our then-current name as of 1863, “Bowery, New York”. Flip it over, and you can see that the dry Hammacher Schlemmer sense of humor was already evident even at that early date: “Not One Cent”.
Tokens like this were a legally tolerated response by merchants to the shortage of small-denomination coins during the Civil War. The widespread hoarding of anything containing gold, silver, or copper was a problem for merchants when it came to making change for their customers.
Merchants started minting their own pseudo-pennies in 1862, called “store cards” by collectors, despite being, very visibly, coins and not cards. Along with hardware stores like us, the coiners included everything from hotels and restaurants to bakeries, tobacconists, and jewelers. Designs ran the gamut from simple garland-and-text designs, like ours, to illustrations of the merchant’s products or patriotic symbolism.
Why wasn’t this counterfeiting? Because the tokens were officially only redeemable for future purchases at that store, and of course merchants have the right to issue store credit. But merchant tokens inevitably leaked out into pockets that would never go near the store in question, becoming a de facto currency in big cities.
After the initial shock of war, production of real pennies hit an all-time high, peaking at 49.8 million pennies in 1863. With the shortage relieved, the US government put a stop to store cards the following year. We no longer accept those Tollner & Hammacher “Not One Cent” coins, but if you have a stash of them, fear not: each one now fetches about $65 in the collector market.
Since 1848, we’ve sold the unique and the unexpected – things you’d never seen, never heard of, and never dreamed you could buy, often at prices to match. See how close you can guess what these classics cost.

Never replace your music collection again

Shop the Gifts for Someone Who Has Everything eventMake “a Christmas to remember” more than a cliché
Express from North Pole Station

The soul of 1982, engineered for 2026
Commodore makes the future fun again
The moment we heard about the new Commodore 64 Ultimate – a faithful hardware recreation of the original 1982 classic, plus modern conveniences like USB, HDMI, and Wi-Fi – we started salivating to get our hands on it. We talked to Commodore President and CEO Peri Fractic about what makes it so different from any other retro tech out there.
Why do Commodore values like human connection, simplicity, and the joy of discovery matter, especially now and especially in tech?
Technology was always meant to serve people, not the other way around. For decades, it helped us create, explore, and connect in meaningful ways. But somewhere along the line, that relationship inverted. The tools that were meant to enrich our lives began competing for our attention, fragmenting our focus, and quietly eroding real human connection.
At Commodore, we believe technology should feel human again – intuitive, purposeful, and even a little magical. It should invite curiosity, not addiction. It should spark creativity, not dependency.
The Commodore 64 Ultimate has gotten some amazing reviews everywhere from Wired to The Guardian to IGN. What do you think these reviewers are responding to?
Finally, the return of Commodore is “powered by the happiness of childhood nostalgia”. How do you progress and develop without falling into the same traps that make today’s tech so “toxic, bloated, and addictive”?
This is an important question, and I’m glad you asked. At Commodore, we believe that the product is the product; a lot of modern technology seems to have forgotten that and only see the user as the product, with data collection through endless engagement as how that product is sold to the customer. At Commodore, we don’t even have tracking cookies on our website. Your privacy is your privacy. Your life is your life. We want to keep it that way.

ShopThe Riddle of the Gnomes
The mystery behind recently unearthed drawings of our gnomic gnamesakes
From our newsletter
By Jason Toon

Cody Soodeen’s parents got sick from drinking contaminated well water on their farm. His search for a solution led him to an epiphany: there’s water in the air around us.
His invention, the Kara Pure 2, is our pick for The Best Atmospheric Water Collector. It draws up to 10 liters per day of moisture from the surrounding air and filters, distills, and sterilizes it into clean drinking water.
This ground-breaking – or, rather, air-breaking – solution was named one of Time Magazine’s Best Inventions of the Year and won the prestigious Innovation Award at the Consumer Electronics Show.
No plumbing connection is required – just an electrical outlet, the surrounding air, and a willingness to embrace the fact that your water supply is already hovering invisibly around the room.

The semi-legal tender that got us through the Civil War
From our newsletter
By Jason Toon

Become a memberAfter the initial shock of war, production of real pennies hit an all-time high, peaking at 49.8 million pennies in 1863. With the shortage relieved, the US government put a stop to store cards the following year. We no longer accept those Tollner & Hammacher “Not One Cent” coins, but if you have a stash of them, fear not: each one now fetches about $65 in the collector market.
