Traditional borders were built in tiers, with low flowers up front and the tallest plants in back, and in early spring that last row often waited on the shrubs to leaf out. These giant tulips change the old arrangement. Their stems reach 28 to 36 inches, putting sunny color right where it used to be missing.
The blooms are golden yellow and egg-shaped, opening in mid spring. Plant the bulbs in fall in well-drained soil, in full sun to partial shade, anywhere in zones 3 through 8. They also cut well for dramatic arrangements.
Robust and vigorous, they return larger each year. Six bulbs make a bright accent, and the 15-bulb pack with its planting tool fills an entire back row. The tallest part of the garden is no longer the quietest.
