Grown-ups are allowed very few excuses to think about ice cream before lunch, so a tulip that looks like a double scoop is a happy development. The center is a cone of white petals packed together like vanilla, ringed by strawberry-pink outer petals touched with green.
At 10 to 12 inches, this is a shorter tulip that fits neatly along borders and walkways, and it does well in containers on a patio, deck or balcony. It blooms in late spring and makes a memorable cut flower, on its own in a bud vase or tucked into a mixed arrangement.
Grow it in full sun to partial shade in zones 3 through 7. Six bulbs dress a pot by the door; 15 make a cheerful edge along the path. Few desserts look this good after a week in the sun.
