Most pillows are essentially soft rectangles that leave the rest to you. This one looks as though someone finally diagrammed the problem. A recessed center cradles the head, a raised roll supports the neck, and larger side lobes provide additional stability when you turn over. Seen from above, it resembles a topographic map of the territory your head and shoulders are expected to occupy overnight.
That tiny, isolated geography is the point. Multiple areas of support create proper alignment whether you sleep on your back, your side, or flop decisively between the two throughout the night. Back sleepers settle into the center section with support beneath the neck, while side sleepers can move onto the higher outer sections without having to renegotiate the entire pillow arrangement.
Flip it over and the reverse side provides a memory-foam surface for a more conventional feel. It may take a surprisingly elaborate landscape to accommodate the way you sleep, but at least someone has finally drawn the map.
